The brief
A dental practice moving into a shell floor. The principal's brief was unusually precise: patients arrive anxious, and the two things that make it worse are hearing the surgery from the waiting room and having nowhere to look that is not another patient. Everything else was secondary.
The approach
Both surgeries adjoining the waiting room got a full acoustic separation — staggered stud, isolated ceiling, and a lobby rather than a single door on the connecting route. Nothing in the waiting room shares a wall with a working surgery. It is the single most expensive thing in the project and the only part of it a patient will consciously notice.
The waiting seating faces outward in three short runs rather than inward in one block, so no two patients are seated opposite each other. Each run has something to look at that is not another person: a window, a planted recess, a lit alcove. The reception desk sits low and side-on rather than as a barrier across the room. Surfaces are all wipeable to clinical requirement but specified in warm tones rather than the usual clinical white, which is achievable without any compliance compromise.
